Default When Assembling Coilovers

Ok, so I have had a noise coming from my coilovers for some time now, and Im trying to figure out what it is. I disassembled my coilover, and I noticed that the bump stop is sitting kind of crooked. I think its causing the top perch to sit funny, and is forcing the thrust bearing cover to ride up and down on the lip, I think this is where my noise is coming from. Not quite sure though.

So my question is how important is it to use a bump stop? Now the bump stop is not a factory one, its a MM urithane, that I actually had to cut to make it fit in the spring circumfrance. I had to do this because I threw out my factory bump stops away.
