Different starter for Auto

Is there a different starter for an auto vs a 5 speed? I looked up both and it comes up with the same part number. I am having an issue since I did my 5 speed to auto swap. When I turn the motor off, and if it ends up on a compression stroke, the starter will not crank the motor. When I turn the motor by hand a full revolution it will crank then start. I already tried 2 new starters, with the same result. Has anyone ever experience or have a solution? Unless I looked up the wrong starter, and there is 2 different ones.

Thanks in advance

I figured that wasn't the issue either, but it is strange that after you turn the motor by hand it does fire up.

Does anybody know how many grounds they have to the motor? I know I have neg. battery to block and one on the trans bell housing driver side. Is there any I may be missing?

Thanks
