IMO he couldn't tell how fast the train was going, Perspective issues with 'oncoming' trains. (Still he should have fucking stopped.....)

and mind you, that train WAS hauling ass by the looks of it.

yeah, but when the boards come down, thats a pretty good indication to stay the fuck off the track the one on his side closed just as he passed it, so he couldnt back up, but he wouldve been perfectly fine sitting where he was while the train passed

Also, it seems like the train went by really quickly after the gates went down. Thats nasty as hell though.
