I looking for a notebook computer for a xmas gift. Something on the low end side around 500 to 600 bucks. What Model, Maker and store should I go to?

I recommend Tiger Direct.

I've been dealing with them for years and they have great service and excellent prices. They have a huge warehouse and showroom in Naperville that you could visit.

+1 on TigerDirect....FYI...There is one open in Hoffman Estates as well, but I think Naperville is probably closer to you.
