Someone tell me why I shouldn't do this. There was a badass segment on how to make a WJ a nice trial rig on Xtreme 4X4 this weekend. I'm strongly considering buying one soon since I need a new DD. I'm thinking of getting the 4.0 since they're bullet proof. At this point I want an SUV so it's either this, an IRS Explorer or a V6 Escape because of my commute. I drive about 60 miles round trip. What the mpg's of a 4.0 with an intake and programmer?

This one is too sick

With a 60 mile round trip daily commute that should not be your vehicle of choice. That vehicle pictured with how high it sits, its aggresive tires would, and the 4.0 would probably get you like 16-17 mpg highway. $5.00 per gallon gas prices in the summer is going to rape you.

4.0L and gas mileage will never get along IMO.

But if you get that you can be like all the high school douchefucks here that go all the fuck out on a Grand Cherokee and never take it off road

WJ's get shit for gas mileage to begin with. The 4.0 is bullet proof, but there aren't too many problems with the 4.7 either. I looked at both when i bought my WJ. I ended up picking the 4.7 because of the 5 speed auto, and it has a Dana 44 out back. The 35 is weak to begin with, and with big tires they are pretty fragile too. The get better gas mileage at 65 mph, but equal out at about 75+. I had the 4.0 for about a week, and decided that i wanted a 4.7. My parents have a Laredo with the 4.7 and selectrac transfer case, NP242 HD, and it gets about 18 no matter how you drive it on the hiway. I have Quadra-Drive, which I do not reccommend, and i get around 16 mpg. I would look for a Wj with the 4.7, and Select-trac. For a build like that, I wouldn't get the Quadra-Drive, but cause the 4wd lock up in the transfer case is a bit unpredictable, and can be a bit to handle in the snow. Plus, they EAT tires.

x2 on the 4.7. they are good motors. the 4.0 is amazing BUT doesnt have the power for such a large rig especially when running such large tires. find an overland and they have an extra 40hp stock with the HO intake and cams. also have nicer interiors etc etc. 60 miles isnt that much, i drive that much ONE WAY with my durango getting 15mpg. the 4.7s can get ALMOST 20 when tuned right.

the trans isnt TECHINCALLY a 5 speed, but it does act like it. there are 2 1st gears haha. hard to explain.

Iron rock offroad has some awesome lift parts for the WJ. i think 4" with a three link and 32s is a great DD and wheeler. here is my buddies.

Not even. My Cherokee Classic barely gets 13-14. I filled up the tank last week and put 19.1 gallons in it(most I've ever put in there, too[fucking $71]) and it's sitting on the last 1/8 notch with 265mi to the tank. Then again, it's an old, tired out, 266000mi engine.

MOST cherokees had a 20 gallon tank. and i agree on the milage. i consistantly got 12-14 with 33s and stock gears.

with 27" tires, k&n drop in, and cherry bomb exhaust with no car i was getting 20 on the highway... best ive ever heard in a 4.0.

Depends on the Year. It's always actually had six gears, before 2001 it only used 4 for forward, and an alternate second, in 2001 they changed the programming and used the 5th. The older ones can be flashed to use 5. The extra gear is actually a higher second.

I get about 200 out of a tank... I also don't think I've ever put close to 19 gallons in it....

Go with the 4.7 Dan. The only issue to watch out for is timing chain failure, but it's few and far between. It's a great motor. Stout, and it gets OK mileage, especially for a chrysler product. +2 on getting one with a 242 T-Case, the Quadra-Drive systems suck on them.

The mileage is that shitty! That sucks. I was at least hoping for 18 highway. Looks like I have to look more into the escape. I had an 08 and it was OK. The older ones just look like chick mobiles but I need the MPG's. If gas would stay around $3.50 I would be all over a WJ.

Indeed. And that used to be my DD all year last year over the GTO which would pull 20-22mpg no problem from a V8 :bowrofl:

The 4.0 will run for fucking ever, though, mine's proof of that.

my 5.3 trailblazer gets better mileage than my moms v6 escape, 5.3 burban with efans and a cold air intake and tune done, I get 21-22mpg on the highway with my trailblazer
