Fiesta and TDI are actually great highway cars. They're quiet, smooth and track great at speeds. A lot of compacts have great gas mileage but are a dick to drive on long distances, and do it everyday.

I was actually quite surprised at how smooth my neon was on the highway. Now merging speeds onto the highway was a change I hated to get use to...

Something on the cheaper side... not sure of how pricey she wants to go and it will be 100 miles each way most highway miles. The planned route is 57 north to 80 west, to 355 north, to 88 west and that is just to get to work.

Do the newer VW have electrical problems like the olders ones had? I hear some horror stories about fixing VW cars.

I am guessing putting on 60 K a year going to work and normal driving.

I drive an 07' Corolla on my 150 day commute. It gets 30mpg in the Winter and 35mpg in the Summer. (80% highway) I'm 6'4" and 290lbs and I'm very comfortable in it. I just crossed 100,000 miles and have done nothing over normal maintenance plus, I bought it used with under 4000 miles for 12,500 and it still books for near 10,000! (Depreciation is the lowest in it's class.)

I'm biased to the Corolla but the right Cavalier, TDI somethingorother, Focus, Sentra, Mazda 3, Civic, Fit etc... will do here just fine as long as its bought with low enough miles and/or has a good service history.

Totally. Corolla is a great commuter too. Even though it's still a four-speed auto, the gas mileage is up there with five and six speeds. Just stay away from the XRS model. It has a stiffer suspension but it isn't any sportier to drive.

Corolla seems like a good option......

I am trying to decide if it is even worth it. She drives a 09 Ford Fusion V6 that is a pretty damn nice car that gets 30 mpg on the highway.

Is the cost of another car going to out weigh the cost of fuel.......?

I have;
-2007 Chevy Cobalt Sedan with 50k miles. Automatic. $7,995. Decent shape, Burgandy on gray cloth. Basic options; Power door locks, windows, i believe it has cruise control, AM/FM/CD Stereo with aux. input...

-2009 Honda Civic Sedan with 29k miles. Automatic. $13,995. This thing is like new. has balance of 5yr/60k warranty. White over tan cloth, same options as cobalt but I know this one has cruise control. Drives like new, I've driven it from the city to tinley park a few times.

I would just stick with what you have. The return on investment of an extra 10 mpg when doing 200 miles a day just doesn't seem worth it to me.

Just some quick napkin math but.

260 work days x 200 miles = 52000 miles

52,000/40mpg = 1300 gallons
52,000/30mpg = 1733 gallons

So even 433 gallons at 4 dollars a gallon is 1732 dollars you would have saved.
at 5 dollars a gallon it would put you at 2165 dollars you saved.

Up to you but I think car insurance, registration, and possible payments needed will eat up any chance of a real savings.

If it were me and I don't care what I drive every day I would have a VW rabbit or something old light and tiny but most people don't want to do that.
