Press Release: SP Racing F1 Manifold for 93-98 MKIV Supra Turbo Released

Sound Performance Inc.

Bensenville, IL — January 25, 2011 — SOUND PERFORMANCE is proud to introduce its new SP Racing F1 manifold; part of the all new SP Single Turbo kit for the ‘93-‘98 MKIV Supra Turbo. Coming to the close of this 11 month long project, we are proud and excited to present the brand new SP Racing F1 manifold. Loosely based on the original RPS manifold, which was unmistakably known for the distinct exhaust note it produced, the new F1 manifold takes a new perspective on a classic design. Harmoniously balanced, the F1 manifold produces a highly unique smooth sometimes raspy exhaust note that sets it apart from alternatives. This alluring exhaust note is sometimes referred to as sounding similar to an F1 car. In addition to the exotic exhaust note, a number of additional improvements have been implemented into the new design to offer the highest quality product possible at an affordable price.

The Project:

Throughout the duration of the F1 project and our research, we have found that the original RPS manifold’s exhaust note is not always consistent and depends greatly on the rest of the vehicle’s supporting modifications. Cat-back exhaust choice, cam selection, port work, and oversized valves all influence the exhaust profile of a vehicle and can alter the sound produced either slightly or dramatically as a result. We have witnessed the manifold produce both a smooth exotic tone and a rumbly deep tone simply from different supporting mods. It should be noted that your vehicle may not sound exactly as the sample sound clips provided by Sound Performance based on this information.

Despite the original RPS manifold’s renowned reputation and popularity, it was not perfect and came with its own inherent flaws. Most notable is the boost creep experienced by many individuals. The manifold also was prone to cracking and cannot fit larger turbo choices due to the positioning of the turbo. The RPS turbo kit itself did not include a midpipe to connect the undersized 3” downpipe to the vehicle’s cat-back exhaust. This required custom fabrication from the end-user for a complete install.

Unfortunately for the RPS manifold enthusiasts, not only are these flaws a large deterrent to purchase the original RPS manifold, but it is also no longer in production. Even with these known problems, many enthusiasts are still willing to pay top dollar for a used original RPS manifold that is 10+ years old. Then upon purchasing an aged second-hand manifold, the user often needs to perform extensive modifications to combat the boost creep to offer a pump gas tune and prevent engine damage. In the end, it isn’t common to see an individual spend $400-600 after already purchasing the used manifold used for approximately $700-800.

Features/benefits of the new F1 manifold:

The goal of the F1 project was simple. Build a new manifold on our existing manifold’s jig (to maintain consistent turbo placement, allowing our same SP 4” downpipe/midpipe layout to be utilized) that was a cost-effective yet high quality alternative to the current manifolds offered by our competitors. Based on these principles of improvement, we are confident that this is a worthy successor to the almighty RPS manifold design. With the knowledge gained from the last 15 years of custom fabrication and turbo manifold designs, we were successfully able to design the F1 manifold to eliminate any and all boost creep issues for the most reliable product possible. By implemented our twin-entry wastegate design, we have proven to hold as low as 11psi of boost through redline on a GT42 frame turbo with absolutely no sign of the dreaded boost creep suffered by original design along with many other long-runner manifold designs on the market today.

The SP Racing F1 manifold is offered fully heat coated to aid in reducing under-hood temperatures. The customer is given the choice of two 1300 degree Fahrenheit finishes including Hi-Luster Silver or Satin Black and must be specified when ordering.

Quick Spool Valve compatibility:

In addition to the revisions to our redesigned manifold, we are able to build the new F1 manifold for Quick Spool Valve compatibility. The SP Quick Spool Valve sits between the turbo and manifold and requires a divided turbine housing and undivided turbo manifold. Its goal is to effectively lower the turbine housing’s A/R (a measurement of the total area over radius internally of a turbine housing) to promote an increase in power under the curve and consequently a faster spooling turbo setup. It’s not uncommon to recognize 400-600rpm increase in spool and 100-150whp increases in the mid-range of the powerband. By building the new F1 manifold’s turbo flange to sit ¾” lower, the QSV becomes a viable option when paired with a turbo (large or small) that utilizes a divided twin-scroll turbine housing for an enthusiast to maximize street driving, drag racing, or road racing by making more power and torque earlier in the powerband. It must be noted that while closed, the Quick Spool Valve’s butterfly valve blocks one side of the turbine housing’s entry ports resulting in a slight reduction in exhaust sound.

Application:

The SP Racing F1 manifold is currently only available for the 93-93 MKIV Supra Turbo (2JZ-GTE). However, if a customer wishes to have the F1 manifold built for their MKIV NA-T (2JZ-GE), SC300 (2JZ-GE), GS300 (2JZ-GE), MKIII Supra Turbo (7M-GTE), or MKIII Supra Turbo (1JZ-GTE) and is able to bring the car to SP, we will happily custom fabricate the manifold on the car. Custom fabricated products may require a longer manufacturing time and may be subject to price changes.
