1992 wrangler 4x4 problem

Buddies 1992 jeep wrangler wont go into 4x4 at all. Worked at the beginning of the winter but now nothing. We changed the transfer case vacuum switch and its still not going. Theres a grinding noise tho when you attempt to put it into 4HI from neautral. The 4x4 light doesnt come on either on the dash. Any help would be appreciated!

if it has the vacum operated front axle disconnect get a hand vac pump and manually engauge it...sometimes that diaphram witll blow or a vac line will colapse preventing the front axle from locking

is the trans in park cause it should be in park, trans in neutral can sometimes allow the output shaft to drag around and cause a grinding...unless its got a broken chain.

does the display have parttime and fulltime 4wd on it or just the 2wd N 4hi 4L ?

fixed the shift linkage and it clicks into position but still wont work no 4x4 lights or anything
