5.3 Vortec motor question

Whats up everyone just have a few questions that i hope someone could help me out. My dad has a 2008 Avalanche with the 5.3 motor in the truck and during cold starts and sometimes rainy days the motor taps like crazy for the first 3 minutes or so before its warmed up.

Im just wondering if that is normal for this type of motor, i know any motor cold is going to make some weird noises but it has 50k on the clock and has been doing this for quite sometime now.

If it puts your mind at Ease, my Ex's mom had an 06 or 07 5.3 avalanche that tapped like a bitch also on cold starts, and always did it.

my dads 03 silverado with the 5.3 has done it for the past few years, nothing really to worry about unless it persists after it warms up

Mine does it too, although I keep a close eye on my oil because it runs out of oil around 1500 miles. I think it has something to do with the DoD that others were talking about. I have an 05' ascender with 69k miles btw

The older motors are normal to make noise... In never cars (gmt 900 trucks, 07+) it's because of the DOD valve assembley leaking back into the pan

my 5.3 sounded like a straight up diesel this morning for a solid 20 seconds.
