manual transmission noises.

I am new to manual trans stuff, so I was wondering what noises were good and what were bad? I hear occasional metal clicks during shifting process, but other than that just a trans whine sometimes. I figure auto trans are usually a bit more quiet and smooth than manual trans. Any input or thoughts?

you'll have some whine and the clicks are probably just from the shifter. ure not used to the sound.

Especially in a Subaru. Look through your owners manual, It should specifically say there are a lot of noises don't worry, at least thats the breakdown they give in the STI owners manual

Also the whine in reverse is due to straight cut gears, this is on almost every manual transmission

The diffs can be fairly noisy on these cars. Whining and even the occasional clunk are normal. You'll notice some trans noise during low speed turning too. Grinding is a bad one though!


The metal clicking is most likely the shifter linkage like mook said.

You'll learn alot of things that are "normal" with a Subaru that would usually cause a reason for concern on other cars. Like the stutter/shake while idling. Normal!
