Random Engine Stalls?

While driving home from work last night I encountered a problem with my Intrepid. At random times, it seems, my engine will not rev while I'm driving. I would go, get to maybe 20mph, and the engine would just stop revving and I'd just coast along. Then I'd just lay off the gas for 10-20 seconds and it'd work again. The RPM's don't stop completely, they just go from what they were at (1.5k-2.5k) down to like 700. It's almost like it slips back into neutral, except the engine doesn't rev when I hit the accelerator. So I limped my way home.

Any ideas on what my problem is?

what engine does it have?
check the basics. spark plugs, wires, air filter, and fuel filter. all are maintenance items and your owners manual should say what mileage to replace them at.
also, make a run to autozone and scan for codes. a code might be stored in the computer even if the engine light is not on. a code will point you in the right direction.
