Carfax wont help you unless there was a recent service done and the dealership recorded it.
You cant always trust a carfax. I know to many cars that were in a wreck with major body/front end work done by the dealer through insurance and yet the carfax is clean! Its up to the dealer to report it to carfax.
You used to be able to google free carfax.

Just checked, its not free anymore. It shows this but have to pay for the details.
