969 Camaro COPO ZL1 Clone

600HP 427 LS7 & 6 Speed T56 transmission. Freshly built throughout, rotisserie restored. From the exterior, it is a restored, stock ZL1/COPO, while having the luxury of a modern, all aluminum 427 with overdrive 6 speed trans. The modern conversion was done a way in which, it could be removed and a classic 427 could be installed without much work. The front subframe was not modified, nor was the firewall. The installation is thorough and high quality. The car is very fast, and runs on 93 octane. It starts up easily, yet has the classic Big Block lope to the idle. It has enough power to run in the 10’s, and will never over heat. It is a modern powered version of a classic ZL1 Camaro. Pro Touring guys…add wheels, brakes, suspension etc, to make it your own.
Body

The X44 body was purchased from Mchenry Classic Cars, where it was rotisserie restored. The base/clear paint is original code 71 Lemans blue, the undercarriage was completely finished in satin black. The body is straight with good gaps. All new correctly adjusted glass throughout, with restored window trim. Latex OER weatherstipping was used throughout with original style window felts. All rubber seals, and stoppers were replaced. All emblems, trim, and bumpers are new OER, or GM replacements. Hood is by Goodmark, and the better OE style hood insulation was used. All lenses were replaced, and light housings were restored. HID headlights were installed. factory overspray was replicated on the undercarriage. Paint shines very nice, and the car is very straight. The color is absolutely perfect.

Tires/Wheels

Front tires are Mickey Thompson radials, rears are Mickey Thompson ET STREET RADIALS. The redlines were added to the new tires at a premium expense, but I feel it was money well spent, and adds to the "sleeper" theme original COPO cars were all about. Stock GM 15x7 steel wheels were painted matching Lemans blue, and original GM dog-dish center caps were bought, then sent out and fully restored.

Interior

Fully refinished in the original Black standard upholstery. Original seat frames were blasted, and painted with Eastwood coatings, springs were restored, along with new burlap, PUI seat covers, and new seat foam were used. Original seat backs were scratched so they were replaced with OER, along with all new chrome knobs. Door panels are new PUI Gold series, along with all new arm rests, window cranks, springs and washers. Dash was sent out for a $750 restoration. Stewart Warner Greenline, era correct tachometer was used, LED dash lighting was installed. The radio appears to be an original AM, but it is an AM/FM stereo conversion with Ipod/Satelite radio plug. Original rear speaker grilles are there, along with a dealer installed rear defrost. The Tilt column was fully rebuilt, and new OER steering wheel replaced the cracked original. Headliner and windlace is new. Rear view mirror is new. OER dash pad fits perfect. Carpet is new, along with premium replica floor mats. Shifter bezel and boot are correct 1969. Shift ball is correct appearing for 1969, except it has the 6-speed pattern rather than 4-speed. Hushmat Silver (similar to Dynamat) was used to fully insulate the interior. Additional padding was used where needed to eliminate and "loose" sections of carpet. New OER sill plates. New vent control and cables were installed and work flawlessly. Meticulous assembly of the interior was performed to eliminate rattles, squeaks and air leaks that are associated with these cars.

Drivetrain

A 4000 mile LS7 was purchased, and a custom cam was installed, along with dual springs and titanium retainers. Ported LS7 intake was used, along with Kooks stainless 1 7/8 LS7 headers and mounts. Engine work was professionally done, and dyno tuned. It made 520RWHP through restrictive (but quiet) 3 chamber mufflers. Custom 4” polyethylene (original GM material) induction was fabricated, along with a 4” K&N filter. An aluminum radiator with dual Spal fans was painted black and installed. GM marked hoses and tower clamps. Peterson dry sump tank was used, powdercoated satin black. I wanted a “factory” appearing installation, rather than using billet or chrome, but the next owner can easily change that. The transmission is a $2300 level 2 FLT upgraded T56. A new LS7 clutch was used, along with a Hurst shifter and chrome moly driveshaft which is mated to a fully restored/rebuilt GM 12 bolt with 3.73 gear.
Chassis

Blasted and coated front subframe. Fully restored original brakes, with all new components. Fronts are disk. Strange aluminum master cylinder was used to make room for the LS7 injector covers. It is the correct ratio, which takes the same pedal effort as it would with a booster. All stainless steel brake and fuel lines were used throughout. All correct color coded clips were used rather than the usable, but incorrect replacements that are available. The new fuel tank houses the LS7 fuel pump which helps reduce any noise an external pump would make. The exhaust is a 3” dual stainless steel system with X-pipe and 3 chambered stainless flowmasters which give it a true big block deep sound, and exits in the stock location. The big block heater box was blasted and painted. New seals and big block heater core were used, along with new control cables and motor. An AMK chassis fastener kit was used for the most “correct” chassis restoration. This car has no suspension rattles or squeaks, and truly drives like a new 69 Camaro would.

Misc

HID lighting was used, and the installation is nearly undetectable and reversable if you choose to install OE halogens. Correct, stock connector is unmolested. LED lighting was used for the parking lamps, as well as side markers. Wiring is American Autowire, factory loom was used where needed. Wiring is meticulous, routed cleanly, and would appear to be factory original. LS7 ECU was installed on top of the glove box, where it cannot be seen, and all wiring was routed along with the dash harness in the factory location. All plumbing was done in ultra-light black braided hose with shadow series black/silver, or black fittings. New fuel tank with return line was used, LS7 fuel pump was installed inside the tank, and is quiet. Wiper motor is fully rebuilt and restored. Rebuilt power steering box was mated to factory LS7 pump. Any bare metal parts were clear coated low gloss to prevent rust, and Eastwood coatings were used for almost everything else.

I hate to sell this car, I built it for myself, but it would make the 2010 Camaro project easier on the bank account. It would cost about $100k to build this car with over $25k in the drivetrain parts alone. The reserve is much, much, much less than that. Bid to own, I will not disclose the reserve. I encourage any bidders to view the car in person before bidding. If you win the auction, you own it, no deadbeats please. $2000 deposit due at end of auction, the rest in certified funds wire transfer preferred.
