That would be fine- just put the correct fuse inline with a heavy duty switch.
You could also use a relay and wire the fan to be constant on wired into an accessory power wire that is on when the engine is on.
Or buy an aftermarket temperature sensor or an adjustable aftermarket temp sensor and relay that in.

Yeah, classic fan problem.
It all depends how much you want to diagnose and fix the actual problem or just fix it by using other means.

You could check to see if the ground for the fan is good. I figure you've already checked fuses. Or that the original temp sender is actually making continuity.

You can get a universal relay + fuse and wire that to your parking lights and use your parking lights as a switch. The right universal relay can surprisingly be hard to find- you can call Autozone or someplace for just the relay- or sometimes find one that will work inside a fog light installation kit.

Or buy a kit from Summit:
These ones you slip the temp probe in between your radiator fins.

These are similiar but you can control the activation point from the cockpit.

I have a bunch of the the right relays but if you're in Rockford then it doesn't matter.

Well, you could always get creative with a circuit board. You would probably want to add a water temp sensor, and figure out what kind of device will take the voltage return and make it relate directly to fan voltage. So then the fan would just speed up when the engine gets hotter instead of flipping on and off. You could add a pot to adjust it too. That would be neat.
