something that my old bmw had was a butterfly valve in the intake manifold to open up in the higher revs to somehow make more power.

that is what comes to mind when i hear "secondary air injection"

does it not have the same upper rev power like it did before?

Secondary Air Intake is an UNIMPORTANT component of the system.
The reason it's even there, is to compensate for the higher emissions
during a cold start. As a matter of fact, after 90 seconds (when the car
comes out of open loop after cold start), the thing shuts off until the
next 'cold' start.

The Secondary Air Intake function is basically a cheat to pass DOT
regulations for import into North America. It doesn't actually reduce
emissions, it steals fresh air from a 'loophole' (in the DOT rules) point
in the engine and dumps it into the exhaust to 'change the ratio',
and be within regulations. Smart Germans, stupid DOT!

Your car will function fine without it working. It won't even register on
emissions tests, because they are supposed to be done with the engine
warm. (ie: AFTER 90 seconds - (open loop)) So unless the Check Engine
light really bothers you, or you got tons of cash, just don't worry about it!!!
(If you have to replace the pump it's MANY hundreds of dollars!!!)

He said that the car uses the supercharger as an airpump. It could be something as small as a check valve, or worse case, the supercharger.

It is an emissions issue as stated before. He said if the car is running fine, it shouldnt be an issue. However, if you have emissions coming up, that makes it an issue.

A lot of cars have seconday air injection, it was required by Cali for some years, I've seen it on GM's before, to find it under the hood, there will be two 3/4- 1 1/4 diamiter metal tubes conected to the exhaust, one at the manifold( if it has more than one manifold, than each will have one) and then there is one that goes to the cat, trace them away from the exhaust to find the pump they run off of, it is usualy a small electrical or belt driven pump

This system is normaly just called the AIR system..... the extra air in the manifold actualy causes "left over" HC's to burn, and the extra air in the CAT helps it catalize more efficently

Silentd's article is a little off if you ask me

The problem is if the CES/SES light is "on" when you bring it in for emission testing, It is an automatic fail. They won't even run the test. If the light goes off when the vehicle warms up, then it could pass. There are certain error codes that even if the light is off but the code is stored in memory you will still fail. From the posting it sounds like this particular codes isn't one of them.

Thanks for all the input guys. I have searched all over online and nothing seems to be definitive. The car runs fine so it is mainly just an annoying check engine light problem for now. I am sure it will have to be tested for emissions soon though so I need to figure this out. I will start checking the system out.

I dont know how the supercharger is set up on that vehicle, but that is where I was told the problem lies. Might want to start there.
