Vanity plate question

Does anybody know how long you have access to a vanity plate if you didn't renew? I have heard a bunch of conflicting answers over the years from 1 year to 5 to life. It was my understanding that after a vanity plate was issued to someone, it would never be issued again. I'd like to try to get back a plate I let lapse in 2013 or so. If I go to cyber drive it is unavailable. Is it possible or am I screwed?

I used to have a vanity/personalized plate several years ago. How can I get that plate back?
If it has been over one year since you allowed the plate to expire, send a written request to:

I let my plate go when I sold the Capri. Later it was on the site as available. So it seems anyone can have it. I ended up getting it again like 5 years later.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm going to contact the SOS once I get my car running. My normal plates expired.
