Default Best OBD2 Scanning Tool?

Amy's Hyundai Santa Fe has a bump in its idle but no check engine light. After seeing Tinfoil's scan tool results in this thread: https://www.thechicagogarage.com/for...gher-revs.html

I am thinking about replacing my old OBD2 scanner that only reads codes.

What products do you guys have and like?

I see the BlueDriver is popular on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/BlueDriver-Bl...N66KP60GCBEWE0

A review I saw mentioned the cheaper BAFX scanner as being decent: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...V77BUTH2ZT3OAZ

If you guys were going to buy a new OBD2 scanner today, which one would you buy?

How about recommended software to use with the scanners if they need it? Torque Pro, Piston, Scanmaster, etc.?

Same, with torque pro app. Works good. Lots of customization.

OK, I'm going to skip that Autel Maxysis one because it's like $3,000.

That's what I paid for the whole car.

Are there any good ones that don't need an app on your phone? I don't want any shit on my phone.

I could actually use something for the old van as obviously my GMT2 doesn't work on that.

fyi most of these cheap scanners only display generic data, which doesn't include a misfire counter. it probably won't help your current situation

UltraGauge OBDII Scan tool & Information Center

I've got one of these too...kind of ugly, but it works well.

I will take this into consideration. Maybe I can find one that does have the misfire info that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Tuffy couldn't find any problem. They couldn't even figure out the code it was throwing. (P1159) 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe.

I looked it up and it's some kind of plenum issue or, maybe, a throttle sensor. Tuffy asst. manager says it could be the plenum gasket but said it looks OK to him. What a bunch of BS. He didn't even look into it. Just changed the oil and ignored the code. Ignored the misfire which was the reason we brought it in, too.

My buddy is the manager and he's out of town. If I can't figure it out, I'll wait until he returns.

Because I don't want anything on my phone.

I'm not an "app intensive" person.

Because I don't. I don't live my life around my "mobile device" like everyone on this earth does. Mine is off 99% of the time to begin with. I only use it to make a handful of phone calls, an occasional text, or to take a pic of what I did on a car or something.

New smart phones have more computing power than the lunar lander. You could literally fly a ship to the moon using them for computing power.

They're so much more than just phones.

I agree I don't want junk on my phone but I do appreciate useful apps.

My blood sugar monitoring app, for instance. It Bluetooths data from a sensor attached to my body and gives me instant readings, charts and high and low alarms. Also sends the data directly to my endocrinologist. So much better than having to have a separate receiver hanging on my belt.

There's so much storage on modern phones that an app takes a very small portion of it.

K

Because having one device to do many things is so inconvenient.

You guys know if any of the many dheaper OBD2 readers have misfire counters?

I see that the BASX does a lot for $23 and I'll get that if I don't find anything better but, as mentioned, I need something to find the reason for my wife's car's misfire.

I was just going to put spark plugs and wires in but I have to take off the damn intake to do it. I'm dumping some fuel injector cleaner in next time I fill it.
