Alright, I drove that car. It is an impeccable example of a 540 with sport package. Service records back to new, including the original Monroney. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid and filter change, Vanos seals replaced twice. The entire cooling system has been replaced twice, as have all of the top end gaskets (valve covers, timing chain covers, intake manifold, everything). The engine hums like new, is so silky smooth - never modified and the current owner helped buy the car when new. It was his bosses, and he said to her, "When you sell it, contact me first." And she did - he had it shipped from Atlanta sight unseen. No expense has been spared on maintaining this car. Plenty of $1-4,000 invoices in the records. I would have no issue buying this car for $6,000.*

But here's the thing. I didn't find it engaging or fun to drive. I know it's held to the highest standard by purist and curmudgeon journalists, but I didn't get that "gotta have it vibe" after driving.

People called the 540i with sport package a mini-M5, which is why I was so excited to drive, but I think that's what owners told themselves when they couldn't afford an M5. the M5s use a quicker steering ratio. A 540i has 17.9:1 steering ratio and the M5 was 14.7:1. This is a massive difference. The steering was slow, boring. The steering ratio and no-LSD (M5 only) really killed this car for me.*

The five speed was surprisingly athletic, and this one crisp-shifting. It was the slow steering and peg leg rear that got me. Perhaps a set of Konis and summer tires would help, but that steering ratio was godawful lazy. And retrofits donít look that popular/easy.

I like it and have owned one. Was my wife's daily drive for a couple years. Ran good and was reliable in the winter. Only thing I had to fix was t-state. To bad no sport seats.

Love it. Sure its 17 years old. But the interior and styling do not feel like it. Engine has plenty of power even for this land yacht. In my mind they really are a bargain for the prices. As long as you can wrench yourself they are not to bad to maintain. Just have to make sure someone else shelled out the $$$ for the big ticket issues .

I feel like buying cars like this it pays to just pay a guy who can truly find you a good one rather than pretending that you know what to look for.

Missed this earlier. These popped up on my radar with the sport package. The 2011 M Sport would be amazing but they're crazy rare.

The regular ZSP sport package is out there but more reasonable, of course. You can spot them from the wheels and (sometimes) paddle shifters on the automatic, plus RWD only. Well, the sport suspension was RWD only. With AWD you got the regular suspension. I could get down with one of these. The car below also has M3 skirts and front bumper lip.

11 forgotten barn-find BMW 5 Series found in Bulgaria
Bring a polisher and some fresh gas.

https://www.autoblog.com/2019/01/03/...otten-storage

Quote:
You can't go back again. No matter how you long for the Ultimate Driving Machine that was an '80s stick-shift, straight-six BMW, the cars went out of production decades ago. The only way to really experience them as they were is either dropping serious money on a meticulous nut and bolt restoration or a chance visit to a factory classic fleet. Modern BMWs are good and in numerous, measurable ways better than their older counterparts, but if you really hanker for a late-80s or early-90s 5-series, a 2019 model just isn't the same thing.

Luckily, every now and them some really weird barn finds come up, giving some lucky enthusiast a chance to relive a car the way it was when it was stored, perhaps new or nearly new. That's the case with this Bulgarian stack of E34 5 Series cars. As Motor1 reports, these 11 BMWs were originally destined for a rental fleet, and for reasons unknown were stashed away instead. Ten of the cars are sedans, and one is a wagon. The storage hasn't been that great, even if the cars have been indoors, as the factory paint now has scratches from the tarps the E34s have worn for ages. At least parts hawks seem to have mostly left the fleet alone.

The sources say the narrow-kidney BMWs date back to 1994, and while they still retain factory prints and protective plastic, they're going to take a fair bit of recommissioning to become roadworthy again: there's a bit of broken glass here and there and we presume the cars have been sitting with 1994 gasoline in the system. Another thing is that not all European countries allow putting never-registered 25-year-old cars between new license plates, meaning that it's likely these cars will be exported to an understanding country such as their native Germany.

But when the factory fluids have been replaced with fresher stuff, the paintwork buffed and any missing parts replaced, the 520is and 525is can be really close to new. Motor1 says the cars may end up being sold after they've been lightly restored, and the price tags could reach 15,000 Euros or around $17,700.
