Build your dream BMW M3 out of this new-old-stock E30 body shell
Could it be the last new one left?

Quote:
Remember Porsche's Project Gold? Last year, Porsche built the last factory-new 993 generation 911 Turbo they're likely to make, using a new-old-stock body shell that had been hanging around their factory premises. Now, it's your chance to do a similar revival of a classic BMW M3, as a rare unused NOS body shell has surfaced in Dallas.

The seller says the $30,000 body shell is possibly the last unused and unregistered factory E30 M3 shell left in existence. Even if another one was still holed up somewhere in a BMW storage facility, or in a weird shrine dedicated to BMW's Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters achievements, there's a very good chance this is the only one of its kind in North America — if you have one in your garage, we'd be delighted to amend our article. In any case, the primer-grey shell still wears all its factory tags, with its part number 41 00 1 979 078 visible in several places.

There are no front wings, doors, hood, trunklid or anything else than the base, sound deadened-body shell, but it's still clearly an M3 item, as the rear quarters have characteristic widebody wheel arches and the C-pillar is M3-specific — one of the things that make the E30 M3 a coupe compared to the regular two-door E30, according to some. The body has also never been assigned a VIN tag, and it's likely never to have held a 200-hp S14 four-cylinder engine between its front frame rails. According to the seller, the M3 body was stored in a bubble for ages, and it's been with him for 15 years. The level of care is notable, as the seller says the body shell has been swapped over from its original factory dolly to a new one to meet U.S. import requirements.

So, to an E30 M3 buff, this is as close to a perfect blank canvas as possible. Bring your own doors and your own crate engine, and make this the best example you can think of. Bringing a regular, used donor body to this condition would go a long way towards $30,000.

Wowie. 43,000 miles. $6,995.

I’d be interested in driving the 530 with sport package. Rack and pinion steering with tighter ratio than the 540’s recirculating ball. And this one looks immaculate, but who knows, all the fluid could be leaking out of dried seals. Too bad it’s not a 2002 with the latch anchors.

I'm scrolling through their other used car prices, and it's not like anything else is a "deal" either

So what's the deal with that 530?
Last summer friend borrowed us an '01 525 wagon driving across Poland. It was a nice ride, nothing crazy but it was a pleasure to drive on the highway.

That's a crazy low mileage and price, I'm itching to check it out. How's reliability on those things? Don't really know much about das BMW.

Maintenance is mandatory. Every motor seems to have 1-2 major hiccups and they’re great after that. No limping around for a month with a CEL or you’re going to end up with expensive repairs. Look how many of them are high miles and still in great condition.

On my motor you can run a shit ton of spark correction and you'll never chip a piston...but forget to change the serpentine belt and it'll shred, get sucked into the oil seal and be fatal...lol

Or...don't forget to replace the ENTIRE cooling system every 100K. Otherwise it'll fail when you don't expect it blowing a head gasket.

The reputation out there of unreliability is mostly from people expecting to neglect it like a Honda

She gone Went to look at the ad again this morning and “this vehicle is no longer available”. Or they’ll re-list it for $10k.

No surprise there. I actually reached out to dealer yesterday and they responded. Said the car was bought from them originally (new). And that it was in immaculate shape. Seemed like a really good price for the miles/condition. Someone got a nice ride.

Edit:He also had that car listed on Bring a trailer, didnt fetch anything over 14.5 as the subframe is cracked and needs a floor completely cut out and replaced.

Yup early model E46 M3's have the issue, the crack and sometimes pretty bad. Mine had it as well before i re-enforced it. Very common. Vanos, rod bearings and subframe are the ones to look out for on those cars.
