Always been a little unsure how these things work, and given I wasn’t willing to pay $1700 for new headlights for my Range Rover, I decided I’d give it a go.

Very happy with the results, lots of patience required:

I've always used Mother's Plastix and then apply a coat of Nufinish. Keeps them free from haze for about a year before I have to do them again. Never tried the sanding kits though, for the 20 minutes or so it takes with the Plastix, so I've never really bothered.
