Chevrolet Performance Brings the Beef With the new 4L75-E Transmission! #TENSEMA16 - Hot Rod Network

The 4L60-series is the absolute workhorse of late-model GM vehicles, seeing use in millions of cars and trucks throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. It’s a four-speed automatic with overdrive and a lock-up converter and shares its dimensions (and a few parts) with the older 700R4. While it served faithfully in stock applications — F-Bodies, B-Bodies, Corvettes, and light-duty trucks and vans — it was common for many hot rodders to swap in 4L80s when it came time for a transmission upgrade.

Based internally on the TH400, the 4L80 is a monster — its larger size means that many cars need a modified transmission tunnel to fit the bigger case and in some cases a new driveshaft is needed. Plus, the larger 4L80 weighed more than the 4L60-series, a consideration for some builders.

For those who want a bolt-in solution for their 4L60 woes, the 4L75-E is GM’s answer, rated for 650 lb-ft of torque! This is an upgrade over the later 4L70-E transmissions, featuring 155 lb-ft more torque capacity.

Chevrolet Performance did this by upgrading the planetary gears with 5-pinion gearsets over the previous four, reinforcing the input drum, adding a higher-capacity servo, a more robust 3-4 clutch and a larger, stronger 2-4 band.

This is a godsend for guys who want to build up a 4L60-equipped car or truck, but aren’t ready to hack and hammer things up for a bigger transmission.

The problem is that the cars this would go in are worth 5-10k and a junkyard 4l80e with some effort will be a far cheaper solution that has great durability. If this were 8-10 years ago this would be awesome, but it's too little too late in a market that wouldn't fully adopt it IMHO.

This all depends on the price of this transmission. If it's over 2k it's not worth it. If under it's something to consider if you want a plug and play work horse

you're thinkin' just that market though. the market is there for resto-mod builds and things of that nature.

Plug and play has a huge value. Absolutely a market for this transmissions, timing could have been better (sooner) as stated. The market for this trans vs a 4l80 are two different people IMO. someone wanting to put a decently hot motor in a car and just use it vs someone modding the piss out of a car and racing/beating the hell out of it.

exactly.

not to mention, the sometimes "better" ratios of the 4l65e vs the 4l80e

I'm not trying to be a downer here guys, but just saying that this is too little too late. Sure the guy putting together a hotrod may go for this trans but those guys are more akin to getting a th350 due to its simplicity for that application. Likewise someone building to handle power will go other routes. I just think this offering isn't going to appeal to either the hotrod or performance market.

nah. it will.

go look how many restomods get 4l65es thrown in them, METRIC FUCKTONS. and this... oh hey it holds that much power, with a warranty for x amount more. IN. and like i said, i really thought it would have been pricier even.

the restomod/hotrod market is unlike anything else. logic gets tossed out the window for cool factor.

How will the warranty work, and what will you include and not include as far as coverage? Will this be like the Vette's of old where they cover you as long as you are not tracking your "track car"?

Its a dangerous gray area to start warrantying race car parts.

Example I slap this in my car, spray a 300 at it. Leave wheels in the air and smoke the clutches in the process. Do I then get to bring it back to GM for a free replacement over and over?

Just food for thought.

How about we take a bet. I'll bet $50 that over the course of 1 year after this trans is released to the general public that no current members of TCG will buy this trans. I mean if metric fucktons, in all caps no less, will use this trans then it's a pretty safe bet on your end right?

What do you say? IN?

entirely different id bet.

GMPP has warrantied their parts... for like... always. that's why they can charge the premiums they do. how does the warranty process work? no idea.

 you're kidding right?

COMPLETELY different markets. I think there is what, 2-3 cars on tcg even able to be considered resto-mods

im talking stuff like this. builds where owners have more "cents than sense".

builds where people put 100k into a 70's malibu with chevelle badges to turn around and sell it for 35k...

how many TCG'ers have built a ground up resto-mod with fuck it money.

this will sell like hotcakes to old farts with a lot of fuck it money. not so much here, where the people with fuck it money have cars that have *a lot* more power than this will hold.

*relative term.
