Random question but what is the law in IL for driving a car home after buying as far as license plate? Bill of sale and title sufficient? How long can you do this for with no plate? Tried calling DMV but their phone don't seem to work. Thanks!

I do not know the exact law, however I assume if you are driving home from purchasing the car and have all of the appropriate documents to prove that you would be fine even if you got stopped. I went directly to the currency exchange when I bought mine. Gave me a plate on the spot.

When I bought the Supra from SC, I had the title and bill of sale and the previous owner let me keep his plates on there (looking back, probably wasnt the smartest). But title and BOS should be sufficient I believe.

Never had issue doing the same.

IL Title Transfer & Vehicle Registration

To transfer the vehicle title and register the car in your name, you must apply within 7 days either:

• In person at an IL SOS office.
  OR
• By mail to:

If you have plates already your going to transer slap them on . Keep bill of sale handy. And you will be fine for the above amount of days. Just have all your documents including proof of insurance there should be no issue. Also found this on SOS website.

Registering a Vehicle in Illinois

Whenever you buy a vehicle in Illinois, get one as a gift, or inherit a vehicle, it needs to be registered within 20 days from the date of purchase.
If you are buying from a car dealer, they will take care of sending this information to the Secretary of State's (SOS) office. When you buy from a private individual, it is your responsibility to complete the paperwork.

When I bought my 03 cobra in Michigan the seller did the same thing. He let me keep the plates on the car for the ride home and he asked I toss them out once I got home. I did as asked. I also had the bill of sale and the seller said I could call him if I got questioned by the police. Made it home with no issues.

I think if you are just with everyone, you're good to go. Drive your car at like 2am when the cops are out looking for DUIs, you're going to be pulled over. .

Drove mine home 3 hours from further south in Illinois, made a couple stops for food, and gas. Had no issues on the highway in that "short" time with no plates. Just didn't drive like an ass, passed a few troopers with no issues.

Title and bill of sale allows you to drive from where you bought the car to your house, driving with no plates anymore than that and you will get a ticket for no registration and no insurance, ask me how I know... Lol

When I picked up my Cobra in Cadillac, MI I drove it home with no plates. As long as you have the bill of sale you are all good to go.

yeah every car ive bought and had to drive home i just had the BOS and never had an issue....granted i also didnt get pulled over.

Personally at the Minimum id have a BOS with the same date and you should be fine.

I believe even if you don't call before you buy it they give you coverage for a few days but why risk it?

Sounds like a different kind copy. BOS is all you need as long as you are driving home from the sale.

When I've bought cars in Illinois, I've always driven straight to a currency exchange to register the car and get temp plates.
