The Chevrolet Corvette is the antithesis of an electric car. With its big, naturally aspirated V8 and sporting intentions, the last thing it was designed for is the environment. Genovation, a small electric carmaker, seems to want to break that stereotype, because it just broke its own record for street-legal electric vehicle top speed with their battery-powered Corvette.

The GXE, as Genovation calls it, is a C6 Z06 Corvette that's been completely overhauled with electric components. Gone is the seven-liter 505 horsepower V8, and in its place are two electric motors, powered by a 44kWh battery system. The new powertrain makes about 100 more horsepower over stock, and has an impressive 130-mile range.

This car wasn't built to set distance records, however. It was destined to break records. Genovation's GXE Corvette already held the top speed record, setting it earlier this year at 186.8 mph. The company wasn't satisfied with the result, though, because it reworked the car, came back to the airstrip, and went 205.6 mph. For an electric-only vehicle, that's surprisingly quick.

We have a feeling Genovation is far from finished with its GXE Corvette, and we're expecting to see even more broken records in the future.
