Learn Me: GMC Yukon Denali

I have been considering pulling a @Chester Copperpot and trading in my Mustang to pick up outdoor fun vehicles. Riding on that RZR the other day was the most fun I have ever had in a vehicle. I was looking at either a 04 or 05 Denali or a higher mileage 07 Denali to tow around a toy and a fishing Jon boat we are getting this fall. We also plan on getting a camper down the road, so a decent tow rating would be beneficial...especially in the more mountainous areas. I am going to try to trade straight up for a SUV, but these Mustangs didn't hold their value all that good.

Would it be better to get a low mileage 05 or a higher mileage 07? Is the Denali worth it over a base 07 Tahoe with some options? The newer Denali that I could afford has over 100k on the clock...too many miles? Any more thoughts, throw them out there. Thanks for the help gents.

I live a cunt hair over 7,000 feet. Several areas around here hit over 10k feet for camping and fishing, but primarily it will be between 6k to 10k feet elevation. Calling some of these areas out here "hilly" is an understatement. I couldn't tell you how steep of grades, but I see signs for 6% (I think) around. As of now, the max would be a light Jon boat, but when we get a camper I could see that pushing 5-6k lbs. Not entirely sure what a RZR and decent trailer would weigh though.

:eek3:

i think you'll want something more serious than a denali.

SleeperLS 06-28-2016 08:38 AM

Really? I am new to towing and trucks. Is there a reason why I would need something more serious?

I'm sure the thing will be struggling to pull 5-6klbs at that elevation, plus the hills? You might need more power.

Yaj Yak 06-28-2016 08:40 AM

04/05 denali is 6.0/full time awd... my uncle had a 1500hd in wyoming and with 3 atv's and a truck full of people and gear it would get winded quickly on any grades... it would do it, but if you're doing something, this may be a case for something more serious

SleeperLS 06-28-2016 08:40 AM

That makes sense. My car is slow as molasses out here

Yaj Yak 06-28-2016 08:40 AM

dat elevation

SleeperLS 06-28-2016 08:41 AM

So are we talking a legit situation for a diesel?

Yaj Yak 06-28-2016 08:41 AM

me thinks so.
or an ecoboost something...

SleeperLS 06-28-2016 08:45 AM

Hmmmmmmm. I wouldn't mind a OK sized SUV. Are their even any that would fit my needs? Or am I going to have to go to a truck?

Oh damn, I completely forgot about those. KJ, my man.

Just for discussion, would a Denali with the 6.0 work if it had a turbo attached to it?

rdsnake 06-28-2016 08:54 AM

I got a deal of the rzr in the for sale section :)

Yaj Yak 06-28-2016 08:54 AM

it'd work, but with the money you'd need to turbo a denali, build the trans, and hope the truck has the necessary cooling capacity.. just doa diesel something at that altitude.

it'd be interesting how a turbo ls would do in the mountountains, but you'd want some SERIOUS cooling ability...

blueoval4life 06-28-2016 08:55 AM

Damn you KJ. Now I want this. HA

I have been eye humping that for weeks. The want is hard, but the funds are weak until I find a different vehicle. That is a screaming deal btw.

where's @CTC DEEZUL at to put the fear of anything diesel into all of us though.

SleeperLS 06-28-2016 08:58 AM

Are the 6.0 diesels in those pretty good motors? Are they a diesel motor that has issues?
