You are going to have to drop the entire drivetrain attached to the subframes with suspension components out from the bottom. It has a torque tube and rear mounted trans like a Corvette. Don't even attempt to try and pull it from the top. Even in the STS with a Northstar we lower (not remove) the front subframe just to pull valve covers. Why are you pulling the motor anyways? Cylinder block cradle oil leak?

oh crap. I recall that they are very similar/ based on a corvette. SO youhave to drop everything from the subframe.

The RWD Northstar is completely different from its FWD counterpart. They don't have the same issues the transverse motors do like piston slap or headgaskets. Yes they do leak oil but if looking actual design of the motor, its pretty stout and has the capability to handle decent power. The only reason they leak is because of the climate change and the extreme hot and cold cycles. Down south they are dry as a bone

the car leaks everywhere, only has 18000 miles on it.
was his fathers that recently passed away.
he wants us to yank it out so he can take it to get rebuilt and head studded.

Since the cylinder block cradle and most likely the front timing cover is leaking, make sure you use sealant on the timing cover, cylinder block cradle, and on both sides of the aluminum plate gasket in between the oil pan and cradle. Replace the crank main seal and check the crank pully snout for out-of-round. GM's part manufacturer for those (which are specific to the XLR) machined them that way on accident. GM since dropped that manufacturer, and that pully has been discontinued since '09ish. Just make sure that is all good cause if not, it will leak again. And soon.
