Default Car buying time: Explorer vs Grand Cherokee

I'm talking about the 2011+ versions of both. I want something that can do light towing, and can throw 4 people and all their gear for a snowboarding trip. I'm stuck between these two. Anybody own one or both? 3rd row seating isn't really necessary for me either. Would it make sense to buy new with the model year end clearance prices? Never bought a new car before so I'm not sure what would be considered a "good" deal.

A 2012 3.5 Explorer with the tow package only will tow 5K, without only 2K. The GC will tow 5K with the V6 and over 7K with the Hemi. Just food for thought.

A co worker bought a '14 Explorer Limited last summer, and he said he narrowed it down to the same 2 SUVs. He loved the GC especially with the Hemi, but felt too cramped. He's probably 6 foot 220lb? ish. That there was more width to the driver's position in the Ford. He loves the Explorer though, real nice. No Ecoboost but the engine that's in it is plenty good.

Cramped in a GC? I'm a tall drink of water and I don't agree.

FWIW I had the same sort of dilemma and then I saw what the 2007-2013 escalades are capable of towing and for their size get decent gas mileage. Better than my ecopoop truck. Also all the mechanical components are the same as a tahoe for the most part so working on it is pretty cheap and they'll run over 200k miles no problem. Finding a decent 2010ish escalade will run anywhere between 20-28k depending on mileage but they are beasts. For the long haul I'll run this thing into the ground.

Thanks for the input guys, will have to keep an eye out for a great deal on a GC, otherwise it'll probably be a tow package equipped Exploder, since they're running about 5 grand cheaper on average for the same year/miles

edit: Don't we have a local Ford dealer as a sponsor on here somewhere?

GC all day. Everyone I talk to that own or has owned a new explorer is not happy with it for one reason or another, and the people I know with GCs love them. I also prefer the looks of the GC so it would be an easy choice for me if I was in this market.

I have the opposite experience, everyone I know with a GC complain about them being in the shop all the time. Everyone with an Explorer says they're great. So who knows.
