There’s no more ultimate bragging right in the automotive space than a Nürburgring lap record, but on the heels of the crash that claimed a life the people who run the ‘Ring have passed down a ban on manufacturer lap records for the remainder of the year.

This news comes from the producers of the documentary APEX, who were hoping to film Koenigsegg’s record run attempt in the Koenigsegg ONE:

It was early Tuesday morning when I received an urgent phone call from Christian. In two days, I was to jump on a plane with my team to capture the Koenigsegg lap-time effort for our upcoming 4K documentary, APEX, which we’re producing in conjunction with Sony. This is the final chapter in a storyline that follows the past three years of auto manufacturers battling it out for technological dominance in producing halo cars for the next decade, cars including the Porsche 918, McLaren P1, and Ferrari LaFerrari. All have shown what they’re worth on the track, but the Koenigsegg One:1 has yet to do so.

According to Apex, even though there were restrictions in place the Lamborghini Aventador SV did a record run. How?

Nürburgring management claims Lamborghini’s attempt happened one day before they issued the latest round of restrictions.

Ultimately, individuals we’ve spoken with indicate that this may be revisited next year when things have cooled off a bit.

Ever since it was sold it went down hill... Whats the point of having a race trace if you cant fucking RACE the way it was intended for...

it's actually closed plenty of the time (look at dates you can visit)

and if you go on it you are not *racing* unless you are running the 24 hour race. else you are just lapping, and doing so with all sorts of people around you who are in absolutely anything with wheels and of any skill level across the board.

The head honchos at the Nurburgring must have been practicing the moon walk over the past few weeks. Why? Road & Track, citing a source close to the Ring, says that management is preparing to rollback speed limits during automaker lap runs. Officials had started to crack down hard after a deadly crash in March which lead to the recent ban on manufacturer timed laps. This pissed Koenigsegg off greatly as it was planning to go after the 918 Spyder's lap record.

So, will the One: 1 get to try its record-breaking run? We don’t know yet, but Road & Track says a statement walking the ban back is being worked on. If management does roll speed limits back it’ll be a victory for the industry. Automakers take great care and concern when it comes to these record-breaking laps, from using professional drivers to renting out the entire circuit. Recently, the most dangerous days at the Nurburgring have been when tourists decide to do their best impersonation of an F1 driver. How about clamping down on them?
