Random Tech Question Thread

So I figured we all have needed to ask little tech questions here and there that really didn't need an entire thread to ask so I started this thread to do that.












My first question is this, I have been having a low RPM, high load misfire on the grand am. Change plugs and just changed coil to plug boots. Still there. I pulled the plugs and the threads on them are oily. Which concerns me. Does a lot of oil on the threads interrupt the grounding of the plug that much? and I am unsure of why they're so oily. Car doesn't smoke at all either.

Valve cover gaskets? I have had a few fail where they allowed oil to leak down into spark plug wholes which will cause a misfire. Neither of my cars smoked when this occurred.

There was oil on the upper part of the plug but I would imagine it would seal as it was tight against the head no? I could throw a VC gasket I guess. It's easy enough

yes but don't forget that you unthreaded the spark plug into the oil filled area.... so it would have had oil on the threads... unless you would spend a crap load of time with compressed air and brake cleaner before you un threaded the plugs

ecotec i assume? any timing chain noise? have you run any fuel injector cleaner through?

yup ecotec. Lifter noise on startup but goes away. Chain tensioner was done last summer. Lucas injector cleaner a couple tanks ago.
