Looking to possibly pick up a truck. Ideally would like to pick up a regular cab regular bed V8 manual transmission silverado. Can't decide between 4x4 or 2WD. I know they don't make this option in any of the new truck styles. Looking for a basic truck for home repairs and to possibly tow an open car trailer once or twice a year ( or when a friend-family may need to borrow it) would be a daily driver.

Looking on any details on what to look out for. Are the manual transmissions any good? How are the 4x4? Have found a few 2003 and 2006 models that fit what I'd like to get. Any advise would be great.

Thanks

I had an 01 with a 4.8 and a 5 speed, Z71 4x4. It was a nice truck to drive around, and got great mpg, but don't try to tow with it. It doesn't have the balls to do it. And don't think a 5.3 would be better, the ratings on them was like 10hp and 10tq. If you want to do any towing with it get an auto, they handle it a lot better. The truck struggled with a 4 place open snowmobile trailer with 4 sleds on it.

depends on rear gearing though of course.

my 4.10 geared 5.3 4x4 suburban pulled 7-8k a few times quite easily.

I had an 04 v6 5-speed standard cab short bed. I loved that truck! I usually got 18-20mpg driving it like I stole it. I put a detroit trutrac in it right away. It was a beast in the winter. I also used it to haul my 84 K5 blazer to Iowa. Did alright until I had some inclines lol. 3.08 gearing
