my truck has a liiiiiittle more rust then i thought lol. its a 02 chevy 2500hd. has the factory fender flares. i noticed paint bubbling and chipping at the seem. when i looked under the truck i saw my wheel wells rotted completely out. (looks like in a year or 2 the fender flares will end up falling off. when i bought the truck i saw it was rusted but it looked solid and just surface rust..... till i found out these trucks rust from the inside out. my rockers and cab corners are going too..

it really sucks these trucks rust so bad in these spots. the rest of the truck is still great. if i had my own garage and my own tools. (and another vehicle) i would take this on myself. so since i cant. im thinking of bringing it somewhere. ..

it sounds like all panels would cost less the 800... so i cant see this job costing that much.... what do you guys think i should do?? its a 5000 dollar truck so i cant see myself spending more then 2000 on this job

Get rid of it and find yourself a clean one for a few dollars more or maybe even a newer truck or if your lucky a cheaper truck in better condition. Period the end !

This. You're talking about putting 40% of the vehicle's value into it and the rust is still going to come back. You're also being pretty generous with your price estimate. You're talking about several different areas on the truck that need parts cut out and welded back in, prepped, painted, etc. I see $3000 as a starting point. So now you're up to 60% of the vehicle's value.

If you're willing to spend that much money ask yourself what you could buy for $8000 ($5000 you could sell the truck for + the $3000 you're willing to shell out for the work). I bet you could get a lot better truck for 8k, one with no rust.

You're looking at putting north of $4,000 in at that point. I was quoted roughly $2,000 just to do rockers on my truck, and, the correct way to do the bedsides is to pull them off completely, replace and repaint, which, is going to be a pretty penny as well. I would just let it rust and keep driving it until the wheels fall off. It's inevitable in this region.

Never use patch panels to replace rust... I've seen it done a million times and they start to rust around the patch welds within a year or so.

If that was my truck, I would get some thick roll-on bedliner and do the rockers, doors to the body line and the wheel arches. Get some touch-up paint for anything above the flares and coat the bedliner underneath the flares. At that point the body can rust away and you won't even know if you put the liner on thick enough.

:stupid: This nickra knows whats up.

This is why I sold my truck, repaired a bunch of rust, replaced a rocker, and it was all back in like a year. To fix that right you will be paying $4000 like stated. Bedliner the fuck outa it

thank god someone else said it.... the rockers arent all the way through. i poked at it all over with pliers and its still solid. i figured just sand the fuck out of it and get as much as you can out then bedliner the whole area that i already have painted black.

does your truck have surface rust on the frame? mine does and i was thinking about doing the liner in the rear where its easily seen.

i love this truck to death but holy fuck the underbodys rust like crazy. how do you guys wash underneath?

I wouldn't sand it too much. POR-15 the panel and apply the bedliner. They rust from the inside out so if you sand too much you'll most likely just get rid of the last metal that would make a mating surface for the bedliner. I have frame rust as well, and I will be pulling the bed and wire wheeling it all off and bed lining it all as well.

and this is why i went to alabama for my truck

i thought about it but i average around 30k miles a year... 80% is probably gravel and 5-10% level b roads.... i power wash the truck every other week and give it a real wash like 3-4 times a year.... even if i had a rust free truck it wouldnt stay that way. i only paid 5k for this truck also.

Trust me, power washing it and washing it wont help. I had my own car wash and salt never sat on my truck for extended periods. When I pulled the bed to do the fuel pump I wire brushed the entire bottom of the bed and frame rails from the cab back and POR15'ed it and it still came back in less than a year.

Fuck salt.
