Has anybody replaced a steering wheel with an airbag?

I want to swap out my old steering wheel for a newer T/A wheel. My car has an airbag and I've heard bad things about them blowing. Any precautions or tricks? I'm guessing the new airbag will just plug in if I choose to install it.

Pullout the battery and go slow, never had one blow yet.

there's a few capacitors in the airbag system you'll need to drain of power to safely do this. hook up with someone who has a factory service manual or alldata or someone who knows more than us so far.

that's what i remember from shop class. even if the battery is off the car, there still could be some juice left in the SRS system.

Just leave the battery disconnected for 15 mins. You'll be fine

Ive done it plenty of times on my car. Just disconnected the battery and all plugs going to the airbag. Connected everything back up and battery last.

I pulled one out of a grand prix once, well both sides actually... wasn't too nervous once the battery was disconnected.

Leave the battery disconnected for 10 or so minutes and you'll be fine.

Why would you ever replace a steering wheel with an airbag?!? It will be much harder to steer the car that way. I suggest you replace both.

What bikrboy and G_T_P said. It takes next to nothing of a charge to set one off. I remember someone I went to the yard with setting one off with just some garbage 9v battery we found in the yard. So that being said, disconnecting the battery is step one. Waiting at least a good 10 - 15 minutes for any residual power to drain (I'd personally wait 30 just to be on the super safe side) is step 2. After that, you should be all clear to go.

I recently removed one from a Scion TC, and just removed one from a G6 at the yard today. They're actually really easy to take out on most cars.

the caps have drains that should discharge em in about 2 minutes with the key off/batt disconnected, wait 10 and your fine.

i dont even do that unless the repair is part of the system i usually just pull the fuse since most dash work requires the key/power

could also pull the fuse. by the time you disconnect the battery and find and pull the fuse you will be fine.
