Default school me on truck engines (gas)

I might be in the market for a new truck soon - I would like to get another diesel but what I want might be a little out of my price range... so next option is maybe the Chevy 5.3/6.0L Gas or Ford 5.4L Gas - I'm pretty familiar with the Chevy engines and I really like them for many reasons - but I would prefer a 4 door truck which pretty much leaves me with Fords - I've only had one experience with the 5.4L - I used to drive a F350 work truck and we never had any problems - but that's the only encounter I've had with one

So... Pros/Cons of Ford/Chevy gas trucks please!

1999-2004 model years most likely - will also need to tow 6000lbs

get an 08-09 if you want the 5.4. Thats when they went to the improved heads with the better spark plugs. Also, make sure it has the 9.75" axle in the back. Those trucks are a bit heavy to be using an 8.8

If youre looking in that year range, get a chevy. The fords werent bad, but the chevy was just that much better. The 5.3 is a bad little motor. Just stay away from the z71 if you care about mpg. The z71 trucks usually had a 4.10 gear.

Id look into a GM 5.3 if you only want to tow 6,000 pounds. I don't think the extra towing capacity of the 6.0 is worth the worse gas mileage if you arnt going to use it.

Could be enticed to sell my 04 Tahoe 5.3 for the right price.

The 99 Expedition I briefly had was a stout truck with the 5.4, and they can be had surprisingly cheap and are rated to handle nearly 8,000. I towed with mine twice, and it towed a car and trailer like a champ.

Even so, I'd still rather own a LS powered truck if the price isn't a deal breaker.

I have the 5.4 in my 2010 F150. They are good motors and tow well. No issues with mine.

i towed 6k with my 02 burban 5.3/4.10 gears a few times and it was fine. i miss that truck. i would drive it anywhere and not worry about it... my buddy has it now with 180k on it and it's just a tank.

$5k - 7k max... But if like to stay under 5 so I don't have to get another car loan... It seems either a 200k+ diesel or 100k gas trucks are in that range - it also needs to be Ext cab or 4door - found a couple trucks just waiting for the Burban to go bye bye

That's why I asked... There is 8 million navigators, expeditions, and f250s with the 5.4 for dirt cheap

I've got an 04 Ford 3v 5.4 and its a great truck. The truck I had before this was a 2000 silverado 4.8 5 speed. It was a good truck, but had no balls. The Ford is a much tougher truck, but the Chevy got good mileage.

The things to look out for on the Fords are plugs. The older 2v 5.4's spit them out and the newer 3v's are a nightmare to change.
