Can you put tint over tint?

I have 30% sides, and 5% rear glass (bought it with that tint). I do not really like the contrast, and have been for a while wanting to tint the sides to something darker, like under 20%. I have been discouraged though due to the added cost to remove the current tint. But then I saw someone post elsewhere about "double tint", which apparently is a thing people do. Anyone have any experience with this. If it’s even possibly going to look like shit I don’t want to do it, but if not, I would like to do it.

[MENTION=206]skeezer[/MENTION] had limo tint over the factory rear tint in his old Tahoe. I'm not sure if its different with factory tint or not, but it looked good besides being ridiculously dark.

Yes you can layer.

Use a steamer to remove the old stuff.

I did the same, 5% over the factory tint but the factory tint isn't a film from what I heard before, more like a coating I think.

I removed the tint from the side windows on my GTI with a handheld steamer and plastic razor blade and some citrus spray to dissolve the glue. Took awhile and was a bit of a pain, but it's doable, especially if you are trying to save some dough. I would do that before double layering tint...
