Doing some research for gf, she's in need of something cheap and fairly reliable. Has to be a 4 banger and an auto. Came across 2000-2004 Kia Spectras with decent reviews, don't know much about Korean cars though. Anything good out there that won't die after a month?

We had an 00 focus for 8 years. Only problems they have are the plastic bits in the cooling system seem to go every 50k. They're quick and cheap to replace. About the only issue I ever had with that car.

I had 3 Mazdas in the past and currently drive a 03 Protege as my winter car/DD. They are just as reliable as the civic but way less money. I bet you can get a nice clean 03 for $4k range. The 2.0L is a pretty solid motor getting 25/32 more or less in that range.

If you can pony up a bit get the Mazda3 I really miss that car 2.3L can scoot and was amazing handling wise.

+1 on the Focus. Never usually hear anyone having issues with them. Obviously there are the Friday afternoon cars, but they are very cheap and easy to maintain.

I had a 2000 Nissan Altima my dad bought new, we ran it up to 275k miles with nothing but basic maintenance and front struts at 225k. Honestly can say the most reliable car Ive ever owned.
