Yet they did all the time. Infact, I'd say the crashes they experienced back then were way more grizzly than what top fuel/funny car drivers experience today.

OMG that was F-ing cool. Twin powered Chevy's, Green Monster, Aircraft Motor Powered, 170mph 9 sec cars unreal... The Music was tits too. Damit my shit couldn't even keep up with these lead sleds in 58. Everybody wears white T-shirts in 58, didn't see the pack of cigs rolled up in the short sleeve or the *** behind the ear though.
