99 2500 cummins. automatic. wont start. wait to start light just flashes and it will just crank. mechanic said he thinks its the ecu.. but that's an expensive guess. any thoughts? we got it to start a couple times by disconnecting the batteries.

Check to make sure the PCM have all good power and grounds going to it.
You would be surprised what i read on a similiar situation your having.
Check your pin connections clean them up. If an ecu is bad it wont ever respond just by unplugging and hooking up batteries shouldnt make a difference. At least i know when a ecu is fried or fries or is shot it just dont respond.
where is the truck? have you tried all the stupid simple things?
and if a mechanic already said it needs a ECU, why are you asking about other possibilitys?
Have it reflashed if that dont work then change the pcm.
Your new pcm will have to be reflashed anyway.
