Typically, you either have to approve the cost beforehand or sign off on something indicating how much you are authorizing them to do the job for... They wouldn't perform the work unless you gave them the green light to do it. So if you approved it, you can't really go back to them to complain about the cost. It does seem excessive, but the whole invoice should break down the time spent on each component. Was there a brake flush performed also?

Next time, definitely comparison shop for repairs. I wouldn't recommend going with the cheapest place, but you'll at least get an idea of what reasonable costs will be. You can also sometimes use those quotes to get a lower price from the shop that you want to do the work. And by the way, a dealer is typically the most expensive shop to get work done...
