speedometer stops working occationally...

I have a 99 ford taurus thats my dd with 79000 miles on it, no mechanical problems on the car. The transmission was replaced a year ago. Lately when im driving Ive noticed the speedometer will stop working and read 0 mph this happens during acceleration and just cruising, all the other gauges still work when this happens. It only lasts a few minutes then it will kick back up to the speed im driving. Also when the speedometer stops working ive noticed the transmission wont change gears. Im hoping this is just a bad sensor or something simple to get fixed. Does anyone have any ideas what this could be? Thank you for any advise.

there a check engine light? maybe vss? output shaft speed sensor?

Try running a code reader both now and during an occurrence if you don't get a reading now. You could also manually follow the wiring to look for issues around the trans such as abraded wire coating or crimped wire.
