in concept form...but hey, its something.

The rumors have been swirling for the better part of six years and now Acura has confirmed that the next generation NSX is finally on its way.

The Detroit Auto Show will play host to three new Acura models, with the center ring occupied by a concept version of Acura's next-gen supercar. Playing second and third fiddle will be the automaker's interpretation of a compact luxury sedan, dubbed the ILX and competing in the same class as the BMW 1 Series, new Mercedes A-Class and Lexus CT200h. Power will be sent to the front wheels by either a 2.0-liter inline four or an optional hybrid drivetrain, with pricing somewhere south of $30k thanks to its Civic roots. Finally, Acura will show off a prototype version of the 2013 Acura RDX that gives current owners more of what their after, including fuel efficiency.

There aren't much in the way of hints or details in the release after the break, but we do know that the NSX will take aim at the Audi R8 with a V6 hybrid powerplant mounted amidships and sending power to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The exterior will most certainly be inspired by the concept playing beside actor Robert Downey Jr. in the third Ironman installment and pricing won't be anywhere near that of the Lexus LFA - Honda wants this to be obtainable, and if C/D is to be believed, it's already been approved for 2013 production.

crossing fingers for either FI or 10K rpm's

i wouldnt hold your breath....they have stated the new DI V6 motor, expect between 3.5-3.7l displacement, there current v6 in the TL SHAWDBBQ rev to 7k iirc and i dont think they have enough r&d time with turboes to drop one in, honda isn't one to include something in their cars that they dont spend ages developing.

Im really hoping its a lightweight, i would expect an all aluminum body and chassis just like the NA1/2. The GTR is a pig at 3800lbs so it shouldnt be hard to come in much lower, im hoping for 3200, they were in the 2800-3100lb range for the older nsx's depending on gen and trim. I think 3200lbs + combined 400-450hp at 7kish with those electric motors would make it an absolute blast.

NSX (Concept)
Alongside the flagship, a new "super sports car" shares the role as the range topper for Acura. Acura didn't officially call it the NSX during their presentation, but everybody we spoke with following the presentation said it was indeed the NSX successor. I took that as good news. UPDATE: In their press release released this morning, Acura is calling it the "NSX Concept". Some text below is updated to reflect that.

Acura showed us the actual NSX Concept which will be revealed in Detroit next month. Unfortunately there was no photography allowed, but I can tell you that this will be one of the biggest reveals for Acura in recent history. Basically this is the car that was spied on the "Avengers" set late in the Summer, but it's clearly been further developed and it's also in hard-top form. Finished in a sliver paint, the concept is absolutely stunning, and carries on the NSX tradition of a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive layout. The design is muscular, futuristic, and sharp, and vaguely similar to the Audi R8.

Compared to the "Avengers" car, the front end on this concept actually has working LED headlights - there are 5 "squircle" projectors embedded within each headlight housing. The rear bumper is also virtually identical to the "Avengers" car but with a real roof and backlight and more "production-looking" taillights, the overall visage is considerably different. Like the "flagship", the exhaust finishers are integrated into the bumper. A really cool (but not necessarily original) styling element is the "flying buttress" C-pillars. The C-pillars feature a "pass-through" which appears to be designed to channel air smoothly around the cockpit and over the rear of the vehicle. It's like an elongated version of the flying buttress seen on the Ferrari 599 - the NSX has a much faster angle on the backlight, which naturally lengthens the C-pillar. The gap between the C-pillar and the glass is fairly narrow, however. For the record, this concept wore Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires in 255/35ZR19 size up front, and 275/30ZR20s in the rear.

Acura wouldn't tell us anything about the engine or powertrain, but off the record they were quick to tell us that the announced Electric SH-AWD system with 3.5L DI V6 was clearly not potent enough for this car. It should be noted that THAT powertrain, with its 7-speed dual clutch gearbox and 3 electric motors, develops a peak output in the neighborhood of 400hp. Obviously with the MR layout, Honda has to engineer a very specific setup for this car, and we're assuming it will essentially be a reversed layout compared to the FF-oriented design which was revealed previously.

We are hopeful that it will receive a very special high output, high revving gasoline engine that is fitting of the NSX heritage, while leveraging the electric motors and onboard battery to deliver on the "smart luxury" promise of excellent fuel economy. Acura told us that they would be releasing more information and details about this car at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show.

Why all the electric bullshit? Make a high compression, 93 octane, perfectly optimized V6 with rear wheel drive and an manual transmission. Save the high tech shit for the trade shows and concepts, give the enthusiast what they want. A sports/ luxury car that they can put 100k miles on

Instant torque, a one of a kind drivetrain with the ability to deliver the exact amount of power wherever it is needed, ability to regen batteries by using one wheel as a generator through turns, lower COG, reduced weight from a larger engine or forced induction, reduced maintenance and wear concerns...I could go on.

This is intended to be a halo car not an enthusiasts car. Honda has never taken the road well traveled in these regards. The Prius and friends really have tainted the market for electric I guess.

Hybrid/electric powertrains have proven to be extremely reliable in OEM products.

When they don't catch fire lol

With modern engine technology, 7/8/9 speed DSG transmissions, and weight saving materials you can have power and fuel economy too. The “hybrid” systems add a pretty good chunk of weight to the curb weight in some cars.

I was referring more to gas-electric hybrids like the Prius and others that have been on sale for over a decade. Battery failures are minimal and the cost has gone down significantly on replacement units.

Volt is still early in its time life, though not off to a great start.
