A turbocharged version of the Hyundai Veloster is coming, the automaker confirmed today via Twitter. The model will first be unveiled at Detroit’s 2012 North American International Auto Show in January.

While we don’t know which turbocharged engine Hyundai will use, the carmaker unveiled a new 204-horsepower, turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine last month at the Hyundai-Kia International Powertrain Conference, according to Autoblog.com. An engine like that would be a big step up from 138-hp, 1.6-liter four-cylinder currently found in the Veloster. We think the Veloster handles well, but it only offers adequate power delivery. Forced induction could be just what the doctor ordered.

Hyundai just keeps bringing good ideas to the table.

Ron Kiino in Motor Trend had the same idea in his editorial this month. Hyundai of today is the innovator Honda was of the 1980's. Honda now sits there with their thumb in thier ass following the market.

My fiancée just bought a Veloster over the weekend and I'm really impressed with the car but under impressed by the engine. A turbo and a decent motor in these things would be a blast. Wonder if they'll put a turbo on hers under warranty?

I didn't like these at first but they are kind of growing on me.

Just spent another night in the Veloster after only driving it for a half hour a few weeks ago. The existing engine and transmission are mismatched with the car's aggressive looks and excellent steering and handling. The engine is weak, throttle response is lagging and the gearing is all for mileage and not performance. Can't wait for the turbo version.

I think it's only 216lbs difference.

And that'll probably be made up with the extra turbo equipment...

people have said 2-3k more than the non turbo version. so fully loaded you will prolly max out at 25-26. Will prolly start at $20k
