Just the Facts:

  • Subaru releases photos and specifications on a near-production-ready "concept" version of the new BRZ coupe.
  • The BRZ Concept is being shown in STI trim.
  • The concept is powered by a normally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine.

TOKYO — Subaru has released images and specifications on a near-production-ready "concept" version of the new BRZ coupe. The BRZ Concept STI debuts later this month at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, with the final production version due to bow in December at the Tokyo show.

The BRZ, which goes on sale next spring in the U.S., is a companion to the rear-wheel-drive Toyota FT-86, which will be marketed in the U.S. as the Scion FR-S.

The BRZ was unveiled in concept form earlier this year at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show. A so-called "technology concept" was shown in September at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show.

The final BRZ concept for Los Angeles will feature a normally aspirated version of Subaru's FA-series 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine.

Subaru said the BRZ Concept STI measures 166.7 inches long, 70.9 inches wide and 50.4 inches tall, with a wheelbase of 101.2 inches. It will ride on 215/45R18 front tires and 225/45R18 rear tires.

In comparison, the 2012 Subaru Impreza WRX STI is more than a foot longer and seven inches taller, at 180.3 inches overall, with a wheelbase of 103.3 inches. Width is 70.7 inches and height is 57.9 inches.

Inside Line says: Not quite as awkward-looking as the FT-86.
