And finally, after months of teasing, driving prototypes and seeing leaked images from China, here is the 2013 Lexus GS350 and the new-for-the-Lexus-family Spindle Grille.
The GS350 comes to market with a 306-horsepower DOHC 3.5-liter direct-injection V6 hooked up to a six-speed automatic powering the rear wheels. There is also an option for an electronically controlled all-wheel-drive. Estimated 0 - 60 time: 5.7 seconds. Top Speed: 142 mph. Lexus also announced that an F-Sport and a Hybrid model would join the fleet.
"Today, buyers in the mid-size luxury segment want a more engaging driving experience, styling that makes a statement and a roomier interior package. With the all-new GS, we're giving them what they asked for, and more." said Lexus Group Vice President and GM Mark Templin in a statement. A stiffer platform with new aluminum upper and lower control arms and larger tires (225/50R17 to start) are a good start to that. Braking is handled by four-piston aluminum front calipers (rear caliper count wasn't given) with ABS, EBD, BA and VDIM (Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management system.)
The 2013 GS will also get night vision, heads up display, blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist (which adds active steering torque), lane departure warning and dynamic cruise control.
Dimensions are about the same as the outgoing car, though the 2013 GS will ride on a 2" wider track. Lexus pegs the curb weight of the GS at 3,715 pounds. Passenger and trunk volume have been increased.
