The all-electric Nissan Leaf will be coming to Illinois earlier than planned, with the first wave of consumers able to put in their orders on July 25.
The Nissan Leaf hadn't been scheduled to enter the local market until next year. But a Nissan spokesman said the carmaker was encouraged by the city of Chicago announcing earlier this year that hundreds of electric vehicle charging stations would be installed in the city and surrounding suburbs by the end of 2011. Previously, Nissan had decided that Chicago wasn't ready for the electric vehicle.
The first 2012 Nissan Leaf vehicles are expected to be delivered in the fall. The manufacturer's suggested retail price is between $35,200 and $37,250, depending on the trim level. Monthly leasing will start at $369.
Illinois consumers with existing reservations can submit their orders on July 25, along with residents in eight states and Washington, D.C. On August 4, Nissan will take new reservations and orders from the general public in both existing markets and 10 new ones.
The 2012 Nissan Leaf vehicles come with a cold weather package that includes a battery warmer, as well as a heated steering wheel and heated seats.
Nissan said more than 4,000 of the electric vehicles have already been delivered in the U.S. Customers in other states, including Indiana and Ohio, will be able to place orders for the Leaf by the end of the year.
