The all-electric Nissan Leaf will be coming to Illinois earlier than planned, with the first wave of consumers able to put in their orders on July 25.

The Nissan Leaf hadn't been scheduled to enter the local market until next year. But a Nissan spokesman said the carmaker was encouraged by the city of Chicago announcing earlier this year that hundreds of electric vehicle charging stations would be installed in the city and surrounding suburbs by the end of 2011. Previously, Nissan had decided that Chicago wasn't ready for the electric vehicle.

The first 2012 Nissan Leaf vehicles are expected to be delivered in the fall. The manufacturer's suggested retail price is between $35,200 and $37,250, depending on the trim level. Monthly leasing will start at $369.

Illinois consumers with existing reservations can submit their orders on July 25, along with residents in eight states and Washington, D.C. On August 4, Nissan will take new reservations and orders from the general public in both existing markets and 10 new ones.

The 2012 Nissan Leaf vehicles come with a cold weather package that includes a battery warmer, as well as a heated steering wheel and heated seats.

Nissan said more than 4,000 of the electric vehicles have already been delivered in the U.S. Customers in other states, including Indiana and Ohio, will be able to place orders for the Leaf by the end of the year.

haha, get your orders in!!!

Right now, the parking garage where we park our Volt and Leaf downtown gives us free juice while they're promoting their "greenness." All of their partner garages now have electric charging stations so not only do we get free electricity but they're located on the bottom floor near the exit.

:fy:

okay smartasses... did anyone read that places in chicago will place them places? and what if you leave it at the theater, fine, but then some dickwad comes up and unhooks it?

yes bru- i know at homes, too. but what if you live in an apartment? duh. sheesh. such meanies today..

If you live in an apartment, then you don't buy a leaf. Electric cars are not for everyone, and if you don't have a place to charge it at work or at home, the infrastructure just isn't there yet.

The Leaf and Volt have phone apps that let you know when there's a disruption in charging. So if "some dickwad comes up and unhooks it" then the phone sends you a text saying charging has stopped.
