Forget horsepower: The Chevy Camaro and Ford Mustang should be competing in the arena of "most special editions, one-offs, tuned versions and collector models." Chevy has one more to add to its list, adding a 45th-anniversary-edition 2012 model that offers a host of cosmetic enhancements to the car as well as bumps up the power, via its 3.6-liter direct-injection V6 engine, to 323 horsepower -- an increase of 11 horses from last year's model.
The 45th-anniversary Camaro gets a graphics package with red stripe badging, dark-silver-trimmed fog lights and taillight bezels, and 20-inch wheels. The interior is similarly adorned, with special white gauges on the dash, Jet Black interior with red, white and blue stitching on the steering wheel -- which also boasts ergonomic upgrades -- and seats that display a "45th anniversary" logo.
The direct-injection V6 is Chevrolet's new LFX engine, which goes into production this summer. The powerplant drops 20.5 pounds from the previous-generation V6 while adding 11 ponies and delivering the same 30 mpg as the 2011 engine. Other upgrades from the 2011 V6 include:
New cylinder-head design with integrated exhaust manifold.
Improved intake-port design and larger intake valves within the cylinder heads.
Longer-duration intake camshafts.
Composite intake manifold.
New fuel pump and isolated fuel rail.
New, optimized-flow fuel injectors.
Structural front cover and cylinder block enhancements.
Stronger and lighter-weight connecting rods.
Camshaft cap and throttle body design enhancements.
The 45th-anniversary-edition Camaro launches this summer.
