Chevy Silverado HD Diesel Bends Ford Over Knee With 765 lb-ft Of Torque

Just as we go and declare the 2011 Ford Super Duty the best heavy-duty pickup on the market, GM comes along and crushes Ford's power figures. The new Chevy Silverado HD diesel makes a staggering 765lb-ft of torque and 397HP.

GM tossed all of the 2011 Silverado HD development money into the guts of the truck — new frame, reworked rear suspension, transmission and a thoroughly reworked Duramax engine. The result is a work truck with some very impressive numbers: Power is up from 365 HP to 397 HP at 3000 RPM and torque is up from 660 lb-ft to an astonishing 765 lb-ft at 1600 RPM.

For reference that's only 7 HP more than the 2011 Super Duty's Powerstroke, but a 30 lb-ft advantage in torque. In addition to increased the power GM's claiming an 11% improvement in fuel economy while reducing emissions with a NOx catalyst and particulate filter. It seems the truck wars have just gotten very, very serious.

GM quickly one-ups Ford with 2011 Duramax diesel ratings, shows off GMC Sierra Denali HD

by Jonathon Ramsey (RSS feed) on Mar 10th 2010 at 8:29AM
2011 GMC Sierra Denali HD – Click above to enlarge

Not even a month ago, at the end of our post on the 2011 Ford Super Duty engine specs, we wrote: "General Motors, there's a big ass ball in your court." Someone at GM has apparently grabbed their big ass racket and said, "Oh, I got this...", then smacked the ball right back into play. The Ford's measurements 390 horsepower, 735 pound-feet of grunt. The General has just announced that its 6.6-liter Duramax turbo diesel has 397 horsepower and 765 lb-ft. of torque, a jump of 32 horsepower and 105 lb-ft. over the previous Duramax.

A closer look at the numbers does reveal some give-and-take, however. The Ford's maximum tow rating is 21,600 pounds, while GM's is 20,000 pounds. And while not exactly engine related, the Ford truck also has a higher max payload than the GM twins. Still, the RenCen pickups take the power crown, and the new Duramax is more efficient than the previous one – GM didn't put a specific mileage number to it, but claims 680 miles of highway going possible from the 36-gallon tank. You'll find GM's press release on the new engine after the jump.

In related news, GM has released the first image of its GMC Sierra Denali HD pickup, mechanical and sheetmetal twin of the Chevrolet Silverado HD. There's an additional press release after the jump for it as well.

So... anyone else want to take a swing at that even bigger ass ball?

Interestingly, GM representatives tell us that they had a bit of a back-and-forth with the Feds regarding how best to handle the required refilling of the diesel exhaust fluid tank, which won't run dry for about 5,000 miles between fill-ups. It seems that when the truck gets dangerously low on the exhaust treatment, its speed will be capped at 55 miles per hour. If you run out, the computer nannies will keep you to just a four mph crawl so that you'll never be stranded completely.

IMHO, an additional 30tq is not bending Ford over their knees especially when both are up in the 700+tq range...

Time for a PULL OFF!

Sure it is. Ford just built this new motor on their own and bragged about it, and Chevy just one upped them. Ford isnt magically going to make the HP/TQ numbers rise until the next model year. Id say Chevy is king of the hill for the moment.

whats nuts is that the gm motor is basically the same for the past 9 years...

still a 6.6... they just continue to change itsybitsy stuff... unlike the ford guys who are switchin errythang erry couple of years. i dont know if thats a good or abad thing... but just felt it necessary to point it out.

if i had the money to purchase one of these trucks, itd definitely be the gm, primarily for the ifs... fords ride like tanks... and i dont need to climb a level 6 trail in this thing or something along those lines.

I also think that gmc above looks significantly better than the ford.

Report: New GMC Sierra Denali HD to get the dually treatment

by Jeremy Korzeniewski (RSS feed) on Mar 11th, 2010 at 1:28PM
2011 GMC Sierra Denali HD – Click above for high-res image gallery

GMC, the "Professional Grade" truck maker under the General Motors umbrella, isn't finished adding luxe touches to its Heavy Duty series of Sierra pickup trucks. Just yesterday, GMC rolled out a brand-new Denali version of the HD pickem-up truck, but later this year at launch it will be available only as a crew-cab, four-wheel drive, single-rear wheel, three-quarter-ton model.

Before the end of the year, though, GMC will begin spreading the Denali love down its entire line-up of heavy haulers, and PickupTrucks.com is reporting that the dual-rear wheel dually chassis will be included. Naturally, a choice of either the 6.0-liter gasoline-powered V8 or the torque-tastic 6.6-liter Duramax diesel V8 will be the biggest choice at the time of purchase, followed by the buyers selection of either black, gray or white. Pricing has not yet been announced.
