Cerberus has had a chance now to fully inspect Chrysler LLC's offerings, and the private equity firm wants to make fast changes. The equity firm owners recognize that a complete overhaul of the relatively new Sebring with its cheap interior and eye-sore looks needs to happen immediately. Unfortunately, some of the cash necessary to fix the Sebring may come at the expense of the Dodge Viper. Inside Line reports that Cerberus is prepared to make an instantaneous decision regarding the future of the Viper, both because of a cash crunch and because the $85,000 snake may be losing its bite anyway with the passing of a new national energy bill and higher CAFE standards around the corner. It's hard for us to imagine Dodge and parent company Chrysler LLC losing its halo car like this. We're no auto execs, but the Viper does nothing but make money and fans for Chrysler, and since it's new for 2008, another redo isn't required for at least a four-year life-cycle or so. In other words, we don't like the idea, and likely very few of you do either.

NOOOOOO! Say it Ain't so! That would be unfortunate to lose an image car like this. Other than the passenger car SRTs, the Viper is the only other Chrysler product that does what it was designed to do -- and does it well, too.

Especially since the lastest improvements make it so much easier to drive.

The viper is a straight-line monster, but handling/brakes have always been questionable.

IMO Vipers have never done that well. Can't imagine they were making that large of a profit off of them. Chrysler's in some trouble!! I'm surprised that the Viper wasn't in the original list of 5 that were getting axed to begin with.

Some cars aren't about making profit, as many manufacturers need an image car that they can point to when everything else is going to crap ... "Look at us, we've got the Viper"

It's more about showcasing what's possible and new technology rather than making a profit.

ya im sorry but u dont know what ur talking about, maybe the old old vipers, all the new ones have a badass suspension

Eh, I apologize.

I watched a topgear not long ago with him driving a newer model *05 or 06* SRT-10, and said it still was rather primitive compared to competitors......

then again he compares everything to a BMW M3, Ferrari, or a Porsche....

Fuck Sebrings.

Like people said, the Viper is there fastest car, and is known by everyone. Its always in competition with the Z06. Seems every year or so one of those cars comes out with something new to put it ahead of the other.

Dodge should take money from one if these shit-boxes, Caliper, nytro, PT cruser, patriot, liberty, compass, etc

fo sho!

hate to tell you guys but its not just chrysler -- all of the car makers (big 3 - chevy, ford, and chrysler) are all in trouble due to overseas manf. all three are going to be making sacrifices due to emissions, gas mileage, bang for the buck - dont be shocked to see the big 3 making changes and dropping performance cars - going to be like what happened after the 60s and 70s muscle cars i think!

I think what you'll see is manufacturers significantly cutting vehicle weight and using technology like direct injection and turbochargers to improve fuel efficiency to meet the new regulations. I bet V-8s will be history except in performance cars, and high-power V-6s will become the norm for larger sedans and coupes, not V-8s like in the past.

All of the big three are expanding their overseas assets. GM and Ford are capitalizing off of global shared platforms -- Chrysler has minimal overseas business now that Daimler cut the umbilical cord. The future actually looks promising for GM and Ford. Chrysler is for sure in trouble, though.
