I haven't watched anything yet but I do know there was an embargo in place, so that would explain the sudden release of them all

I saw that it too, I think it was a press release and all of the YTbers did their thing at the same time. Still seems like it was all "sponsored"

Manufacturers seem to be doing that more and more these days. McLaren did the same thing with the 600LT spider when they brought all the YouTube personalities right into my back yard to drive the cars. They were all literally minutes away from me and I had no idea until the vids started coming out.

surely the timing was the embargo

most of these guys don't get invited out to do this kind of stuff right? i bet they weren't sponsored, just happy to have this opportunity, so probably some more praise than normal?

Styling aside, it seems to be a decent sports car, as long as it's not too overpriced.
Not sure it's worthy of the Supra name though and why not just get an actual BMW?

If the buyer is looking for a "sports car" I think it will be a good buy. If it was a little cheaper for the 6TT I would say great buy. Power will be easy to come by as I am betting the motors are identical between the Toyota and BMW. That means intercooler upgrade and a tune will add significant power to that motor. So it's a car that tracks well, makes good power, and has BMW quality throughout.

The older model Supra were sports cars. We are just accustomed to seeing the Mark IV Supra as a big hp drag/roll race car as that is what we see all over the place. That doesn't mean that the replacement should be a Drag Pack or 1320 car like Dodge has done branding well with. That being said, I would love to see what future models and redesigns of this car will look like. Maybe the looks will be improved upon (I doubt it lol) and maybe we will see models with more hp, less weight, launch control, and so on. A more capable and rounded car. But my guess is that Toyota isn't looking to target or replicate a Nissan GTR. I think they want to keep a true drivers car. A hopped up Miata if you will.

Either way, I hope this sharing a car's development to brand two cars works well. I would like to see this happen more often. I think it is a great way for one of the two brands to offer a better car than they would probably put out on their own. Imagine if Ford shared the BMW 5 series, or Dodge offered a version of the Audi RS6? Ummm yes please! haha

So so far, all I see is extreme dick sucking for this car.

A Toyota sports car intrigues me more than a BMW sports car. A BMW sports car with Toyota badges is just nonsense.

I hate to say it, but the BMW sports car is probably better than anything Toyota would have built.

And since Toyota seems to have no intention of building their own cars, between this and the 86, be happy there is a cheaper option BMW available as the Supra. lol

I think it's a very good looking car .

At the 21 minute mark of the video ^^^^^ he talks about interior wallow with windows down . My fiesta is like that if you have a window down , need to crack another . Very very annoying . That would really suck if the Supra had that . Seeing that this car will be mostly a summer car and windows down .

Ehhhh. Maybe so. I can't really argue with you on that. I would have still preferred a Toyota built sports car. Better than a BMW or not, it would have been it's own beast. As Toyota locks their PCM's up like fort Knox, I hope the current offering is tunable without a standalone.

I shouldn't have to modify a brand new 50g car to keep up with a 1le or pp2 for 10g less. I don't see the appeal.
I don't want to hear any shit about "driving experience" or "fun factor" either.

I mean, those are pretty huge things when buying a car.

But I know what you are saying to a degree. Not everyone wants a Camaro because it is faster around a track than the Supra. What if the interior of the Supra is nicer than the Camaro? What if ride quality is better? What if insurance is less? There are a lot of factors to buying a car. And most are driven by want and not common sense. So there is that too. haha

I think this will sell well based on the same alone. Then based on the TT 6 cylinder (if they can tune them). I think you will see them all over the place. I can say I hardly ever see a 1LE car on the road.

I hope Doug D is right and that Toyota does intend to release a better performance package one that takes advantage of all of those 'aftermarket' provisions with a healthy bump in power and a 6 speed option. Toyota Supra TRD or something like that.

Pick any performance metric. And driving experience is different for everyone. Some people won't drive a sports car at all if it's not a manual.

IIRC the supra is about $6k less than the z4, with 30 less HP. I'd spend the extra $6k for an actual bmw given that, but that's just me.

This thing is still a swing and a miss IMO, not because it's a bad car (good engine, good trans, looks good), but because they're using Supra name to help sell a mediocre overpriced sportscar. Seems like more of a cash grab than anything else

They should have learned a lesson from Nissan with the GTR and made something really cool.

I have said it a few times, they should have called this the Celica. If this sold well then maybe they would consider designing a whole new car that could be the "supercar" Supra that everyone seems to want.

I have a feeling what the Toyota sells for out the door and the BMW sells for out the door will be more than that $6K difference. It will be interesting to see how insurance rates compare as well. I also think you won't see people buying one car or the other based on the price. I think it will be based more on the brand and model name.

I am interested to see what the demographic profile will be of the average Supra buyer.

was the celica ever all that cool?

supra sits as a halo in yer hearts cuz drag builds and fast and furious, but at the time wasn't it scrapping with evo and sti? i guess the more hot builds of them though.

Some of the Celica were pretty badass for their time. In design and features. Especially some of the overseas versions that were used in World Rally Champ and similar series.

The Celica was the first production car to use water injection and Anti-lag for spooling. They were available with all wheel drive as well. They were pretty cool in their own right. Again, not like a Supra. But this Supra is lacking what Supra fans wanted. So I think the Celica would have been a better name for what this car ended up being.
