Default 2019 Silverado is getting a turbo 4

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/co...ylinder-engine

Displacing 2.7 liters, the long-stroke forced-induction inline-four is an all-new unit that General Motors said was designed specifically for truck applications. It packs a solid punch with 310 horsepower and 348 lb-ft of torqueójust 35 lb-ft shy of the optional 5.3-liter V-8óthat is available from as low as 1500 rpm and continues to 4000 revs. The engine is paired exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Idk about that.... A 4 cylinder in a truck sounds like a bad idea but I guess we will see what happens.

I can see this being a great option for those that tow nothing but haul occasional stuff from Menards and the likes.

Iíd be skeptical towing anything with a four.

What’s going to be the longevity with these smaller engines in trucks vs the traditional v8?

We tow with our forester just fine, and it’s not even the turbo four. Nothing big like a car of course, but we’ve probably gone a little over the tow rating a couple times with uhaul trailers when we moved with no issues.

I think this a great idea good for GM for dropping a 4 banger in a truck

It makes sense. Thereís lots of people who buy trucks that never haul anything. Iím guessing the gas mileage will be superior to other trucks.

Doesnít the F-150 have a 2.7L V-6 as itís base motor?

And the article also says ďThe automatic transmission does the four-cylinder no favors, however, as itís eager to reach its tallest ratio and apathetic to downshift when the accelerator pedal is floored.Ē Sounds Just like the 8 speed in my Colorado until I had it tuned.

Not sure how I feel about this. The combo of Low revving, quick spoiling turbo, all low end power might be decent in a truck.

If they still make it available with some higher trim levels, I can see it selling well. Like mentioned, so many people who just want to drive a truck.

I can't wait till these become common and cheap, I'd totally swap one in to something. Maybe shove a Holset on it and tune it up a bit. Would be great in a turd gen, G-body, S10 etc. for a daily. I bet the mpg would be nuts too.

Base is a 3.3 N/A V6, next step up is a 2.7 TT EcoBoost V6, then either the Coyote or 3.5 TT EcoBoost

Meh. I feel most buyers even those who don't use their trucks still require the largest motor possible. No one thinks sensible when it comes to purchases

People are going to love it when fuel prices go up. I agree, people always want the biggest engine just because it's cool (totally guilty here), but when gas hits $4/gallon both manufacturers and consumers are going to be happy to be selling/buying pickups without breaking the bank on gas

2.7 is a big 4cyl, i'm sure it's more than capable, as long as it's not plagued with issues I bet it'll sell well once people get comfortable with it

Everyone seems to forget that as the economy picks up, gas prices go with it due to increased consumption. GDP growth is increasing and fuel prices will follow suit, likely in the very near future

Yea sorry, would not want a 4cyl with any sort of turbo in a full size pick up. I need to hear the V8 rumble on start up and whiling towing 7k + lbs of trailer weight.

I never squawked when gas prices were $4/gallon filling up a V8 SUV with a 42 gallon tank. I just accepted it as part of the deal of what I want the vehicle for.

But back on point, yea, no!

And do you think all ~2.6 million people that bought pickups last year all think the same way? When gas goes up, truck sales go down

No, because most won't be in the market for a new pickup at that exact time prices go up and most understand that they're buying a truck and that fuel economy, while a factor when looking at their truck choices playing a role in purchase decision, kinda accept the fact that you're not going to get Prius like fuel economy with one regardless.

Honestly for me I would but it under the assumptions that...

2 years into the life cycle the engine provides reliable under mods...and that there is a tune out there that can bump the HP/TQ up atleast 10-15%.This would be great for me as I tow nothing other than HD runs lol
