If the story is true, I think they couple needs to reach out to a lawyer and get Tesla involved to pull the records from the car.
the TL/DR.
Mercedes rents a Tesla Model X through a middleman. Said Model X belongs to a private couple. They tear it apart, thrash it on a test track, and return the car damaged.
I think they are screwed in court. Thats way beyond what a rental agreement is about.
