2018 Saleen S1 Pictures, Info, and Pricing - New Saleen Supercar Revealed
Saleen, the Ford tuner turned manufacturer of the S7 supercar, is back with a new supercar, the S1. Unlike the S7, which was built for outright speed, the S1 focuses more on weight and agility, using an all-aluminum tub, carbon fiber body panels, and a 450-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
Company founder Steve Saleen unveiled the S1 today at the Los Angeles Auto Show, giving a brief rundown of the car's specifications and performance. The engine, a 2.5-liter turbo four making 450 horses and 350 lb-ft of torque, will be built-in house by Saleen—contradicting previous reports that assumed it would be supplied by Ford. There's no official word on transmission options, but the car shown in LA was equipped with a manual gearbox.
According to Saleen, the S1's aluminum tub and carbon fiber body give it a curb weight of just under 2700 pounds. The automaker claims it'll do 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, a quarter-mile time in the low 11-second range, and a top speed over 180 mph. Additionally, thanks to a wishbone suspension and Continental performance tires, the S1 will be able to pull an impeccable 1.2gs of lateral acceleration, Saleen says.
The S1 will start at $100,000; the tuner began taking $1000 pre-orders at the show today. North American deliveries are expected to begin in late summer 2018.
Initially, all Saleen S1s will be built by Saleen in North America. Production will then shift to China with Jiangsu Saleen Automotive Technology, a joint-venture firm established by Saleen and its Chinese partners in 2009. This Chinese factory will also assume responsibility for an "entirely new line of Saleen vehicles," which have yet to be revealed.
